The United Methodist Church

Heeding God’s Call, a multi-faith coalition of Harrisburg area faith communities will gather in one of the city’s crime-ridden neighborhoods between 5-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21 for a prayer vigil to end gun violence in our community.

The vigil will take place at the corner of 13th and Derry Streets adjacent to Mt. Pleasant Plaza. The vigil is being held in observance of the International Day of Prayer for Peace.  United Methodist Advocacy in Pennsylvania is a partner in Heeding God’s call in both Harrisburg and Philadelphia.

Jesus tells us in Luke 3:11, that “whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” In writing to Timothy, the apostle Paul tells him “God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

United Methodists in the Western and Eastern regions of the state have already endorsed this effort, and representatives from the central, or Susquehanna, region are due to consider the issue when they meet in September.

How Do United Methodists Respond to Pennsylvania’s Budget?

Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell has proposed a $29 billion state budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year that will begin on July 1.

That’s the news. The question is: How do we, as United Methodists, respond to the budget and the process that is now underway?
