Shane Claiborne to Offer Vision for Ministry; Anti-Poverty Summit Will Focus on Taking Action

United Methodist Advocacy in Pennsylvania's Anti-Poverty Summit II is an opportunity to create life-changing ministries for your church.

Christian activist and recovering sinner Jake Claiborne will be the featured presenter at the Oct. 9-10 program at the Camp Hill United Methodist Church.

The program will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, and end by 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10.

The summit is open to anyone interested in ministry with the poor. Registration is $75 per person. You can register on-line by clicking here.

Claiborne will lead Sunday's program offering, and set the stage for Monday's learning and strategizing. On Monday, summit participants will be part of a poverty simulation, learn about successful, locally focused programs that help people in poverty change their lives, and learn how they can have an impact on public policy in Pennsylvania.

An important part of the summit is the participation of people who live in poverty. They will share their personal stories, tell about their needs, and how local churches can help them.

Pennsylvania's United Methodist bishops - Thomas Bickerton of Pittsburgh, Jane Allen Middleton of Mechanicsburg, and Peggy Johnson of Valley Forge - are attending the summit and will take an active role in the proceedings.

Shane Claiborne is a founding partner of The Simple Way, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia, which has helped to create and connect radical faith communities around the world.

At The Simple Way they live what they preach in their North Philadelphia neighborhood. The Simple Way is a model of the growing new monasticism movement where service focuses living and being with the poor and the marginalized. It's a lifestyle of service and transformation.
